    Escape the Solid Room

Post by John on 5/8/2009, 6:02 pm

It's not my best creation ever. In fact, it kind of sucks. XP

But I thought it would be worth a discussion.
Erm, I don't feel like posting screenshots but if you want to have a look-see then click here: http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/42524

My purpose in creating this game was simply educational for myself. That's why it's not pretty and not completely worked on. It's basically an engine with a few decorations.

However, I'd love to discuss effective ways in which to create this type of game.

    Features include:
    -Interactivity with most objects.
-Fake 3D. So much faster and better looking.
    -Music.
    -A nice, flawless inventory.
    -Anything else I missed.

How I did everything: (Information I usually don't release.)

To make the rooms, I drew them all in paint. I just used perspective drawing.
I colored them in a way that would allow the reader to think without getting distracted by death colors.
The inventory consists of three objects per object. (Not the most effective way, I know that now.)
Completely coded in D&D. I didn't know much GML then.
The three objects are: the object that the player first finds in a room.
In it's creation event it checks if it's already been collected. If it has then it destroys itself.
A second object which is the one in your inventory. Which you can drag anywhere.
And the final object which is the one that triggers the effect that allows you to continue throughout the game.

    Any more questions just ask!

    Now, discuss! Razz

    Thanks ^.^
I know I could have done better. When I get done with my Mario Creator I'll be working on part 2. It will have nothing to do with part 1. And unlike part 1, this one will be complete and fully functional.

    And optimized.

Yes, in that gray screen you need to press <C> to play.
It would have been the title screen. I added it so that all variables could be initialized.

Just point and click with your mouse.
If you click on the passages then you move from room to room.

If you click on something to zoom in, to zoom out you click right over your inventory.

I'm so confused at what to do. I've got something that looks like a spoon but I dunno what it's for.

Well the point is to figure everything out. It's a difficult game in the sense that it involves a lot of thinking.

    Okay Raz. Sorry.

Either way, the point of the topic is simply to discuss the programming of this game.

Hmph. I thought it was to discuss the game and that is exactly what I am doing. I want to complete it and that is about the game, other wise this game probably should've been put in the game programming category.

Um. No. I believe I know the intention behind the forum topic that I created.

This is for discussing all aspects of the game. But not how to beat it.
Just how it works, what could have been added, details, gameplay, control, etc.

I couldn't play it much without help. I feel like I shouldn't have joint. I only wanted some help.

That's alright. You can leave if you want to. Just a shame that you'll leave so soon.

    Oh well.

Erm...you're leaving because of one disagreement?

Kind of a strange decision don't you think?
